Since October 2008 Ian Cuddy, founder of PublicSIRO, has been compiling, researching and cataloguing a regularly updated list of publicly reported data security incidents in the UK public sector. As a result, this tally represents the most comprehensive resource on UK public sector data breaches available.
The original Data Breach Log has attracted significant interest in particular from involved in information assurance, IT audit and data protection within in the public sector. We’re pleased to report that a number of central government departments and local authorities are re-using content from this to promote staff awareness of information security issues. Examples of re-use have included:
- Organisations publishing the list of incidents (in full or part) on their corporate intranet;
- Placing hard copies of the Log staff on Staff Noticeboards.
- Highlighting specific examples to staff in data protection training;
- Helping senior management appreciate the case for investment in information assurance;
Feedback from public sector organisations shows the tally provides a useful and powerful tool that reinforces the message that data breaches can occur to all types of organisations, are far more common than we often think and, in many cases, are easily preventable.
If you are a public or voluntary sector organisation you can re-use the Data Breach Log free of charge. If you would like to do this, then please contact us by emailing editor@publicSIRO.com.
