About

Welcome to publicSIRO: A dedicated online resource for public sector Senior Information Risk Owners (SIROs), providing news, information and resources relating to information security, assurance and governance.

The loss of two discs by HM Revenues & Customs in October 2007 marked a turning point in the UK public sector’s approach to data security.  The leakage of 25 million child benefit records thrust information security and data protection firmly into the public spotlight.  Ever since, preventing data breaches, addressing information risks and developing a ‘culture of security’ has become a key priority for public sector.  While significant improvements have been achieved in shoring up data handing practices and network defences, information security remains to pose a considerable ongoing challenge for virtually all public sector organisations.

publicSIRO aims to support the work of public sector SIROs and their partners to improve practices and develop information governance maturity within their organisations.

PublicSIRO also continues the ongoing UK Public Sector Data Breach log originally compiled for Public Sector Forums, representing the most comprehensive resources on public sector data breaches currently available.
